Challenge Check in #3

Check-in #3: After you complete your challenge, reflect on the process of your experience writing for this specific genre. How did completing the chosen challenge enhance your understanding of Gothic representations? What difficulties or issues did you have during the writing process?

This writing class was an amazing experience. My perspective of gothic changed greatly, and I realized that gothic is everywhere in society. Writing many different essays with certain structures will help immensely with my future in business. I did not know what college was going to be like coming in, but through this writing topic it definitely helped me realize that I can take and simple problem and turn it into a long persuasive essay. This was a cool genre because gothic was never really part of my life and made me realize it is not always necessarily monsters and killing. The class over all was very short, but filled with tons of valuable information. A particular favorite time in this class was when we went over what gothic meant to us and we filled the whole board with many different ideas and topics. That activity showed me that The Gothic is not just one simple idea, it is an abstract idea that can be interpreted by anyone. This class took the stereotypical idea of gothic and changed it into a much broader idea. I will for sure use the ideas from the gothic in the future while writing papers, and I will notice many gothic subjects in future readings.
Writing about The Yellow Wallpaper showed me another viewpoint of how The Gothic is represented even in small situations. It showed me that it can be in small or really big situations. This story specifically showed me how in a normal every day house just one small flaw can escalate quickly into a huge problem that could ruin someone's life.
I did not have many issues with the course over all, it actually helped a lot more than it hurt. I had issues previous to the class with structuring essays but after the class it became a lot easier to not summarize as much and evaluate the topic at hand.

Blog Post #4 Literacy Sponsor

A.

Dr. Seuss or Theador Seuss Geisel was born on march 2, 1904 and died September 24 1991. He wrote 46 different children's books and became so popular they created a theme park about him called Seussville. He was a very influential literary sponsor in my child hood. He was a very famous person and author who wrote many inspirational messages. His books were short and entertaining, but always made a clear message about the morals, ethics, and problems with society. The books were geared towards children but any adult could see the strong message he was presenting, which is why many parents enjoyed reading these educational books to their children. In one of his books the "Lorax" he explains how pollution, greed, and lust can ruin an environment where people and animals live, all by using a brilliant rhyme scheme. This was my favorite book as a kid because I was fascinated by all the amazing characters he created, then devastated when they were harmed and forced to leave the land they grew up and lived in. These strong messages through a long series of books left a big mark on children and parents, while inspiring everyone to change the world. The way Dr. Seuss portrayed how the real world looks through a cartoon is hard to think about because today there is no other book, movie, or television show that can inform people about the problems with society the way he did.

Proposal Essay Problem Statement

Proposal Essay Problem Statement

A person who cannot quite afford everything has to make certain choices due to their lifestyle. Sometimes they are forced to make tough decisions that can potentially hurt them or others around them. The price of food versus the amount of income to people greatly affects their decisions with food.  Say I had $10 to spend for the whole week and I am walking down the aisle of a grocery store, I see there is a pound of oranges for $7, but right outside the window is a McDonalds advertising a hamburger for $1. This would lead me to buy the burger because even though they are not as healthy there is more food per dollar, which would keep me full, but keeping me unhealthy as well. Even though they cannot help it these actions hurt their health leading to many cases of malnourishment, obesity and diabetes. There are high regulations in every food making industry whether its produce, fast food or slow food they are all affected. These regulations specify which chemicals to use or how much they can be used. The regulations also affect many of the safety aspects such as the work done to prepare the food within the factories or on the crops. Regulations stand such as not being allowed to modify the seeds such as cross breeding with other plant seeds or using certain pesticides on the crops to protect them. There would be an increased cost to the farmer because they have to pay for certain seeds as well as paying more for certain pesticides. This could also be detrimental to a farmer because if there were a drought or pest attack that could have been prevented which would lead to the same demand but less supply, which means the price for the final product will be much higher. Right now there is an interest in increasing the regulations such as the FDA labeling whether the food is grown in genetically modified crops.  Without proper eating habits people are led into malnourishment which is lack of nutrients in foods such as sugars, vitamins and minerals. Most of the products they buy are cheaper and filled with preservatives, dyes and added sugars which also contains higher trans fats. If these are the only four things people are consuming it will lead to fatigue, obesity and weaker bone structure. If this goes on for too long the health issues may become very serious. When this goes on for an elongated period of time it leads to these people needing treatment for the conditions caused by eating unhealthy. This is also something they have to pay for which is far more expensive than food. Most people have to pay a lot of money to visit a doctor or get testing done. The other side to it is when they apply for insurance with their health record they will have to pay more because they are more at risk. This also leads to people other than them paying higher insurance bills to compensate for their risk factor in the insurance industry.

1.       What is the broader topic that the author proposes is a problem?
Over priced produce is a problem to society.
2.       How does the author define that topic? State that definition here.
The definition talks about people not being able to afford these goods which affects everyone.
3.       Is there a readily identifiable thesis statement which states the problem and reasons in a because  claim?
       Yes.
How is the problem contextualized? (e.g. when the problem began, what has already been done regarding the problem, the consequences of the problem, etc.
The consequences of the problem brought up obesity, disease, safety, and impacting the economy.
Is the problem topic specific and located in the smallest possible category? (e.g. cats > feral cats on UF’s campus)
Yes it refers to a specific class of people.
Is the problem unique? If the topic is popular (e.g. obesity, gun control, abortion), does the problem statement offer a new interpretation of the common problem?
The problem is unique because nobody has created a proposal about lower class people being affected by high priced foods which leads to a bad economy.

Proposal Idea

Proposal Idea

Driving has become very dangerous in society. A raise in the driving age would put more mature people on the road while increasing safety for society. Most laws and every day activity for adults involves either being 18 or 21.

The safety would increase without reckless and immature teenagers behind the wheel. Another solution would be to slow speed limits.

A study on drivers shows teenagers between ages 15-17 are most dangerous on the road. They are dangerous because they are new to driving, immature and treat the car as a toy.

Create a video of a reckless teenage driver hitting someone. Then explain how the limits being lowered would explain create a safer environment.

Blog Post 3/ Challenge 2

Alan Webb is an outstanding runner who accomplished the unbelievable. He is the current American record holder for the mile. He ran in high school just like I did and from there on he broke records and impressed everyone. He was a star from the start who was ambitious and had a dream.

I joined track and field as a junior right after leaving the baseball team. My biggest fear was my bold move to switch sports would fail. I had no clue what I was in for, I didn't know how fast my competition was , and I didn't know how fast I was. Just like Alan, I slowly started standing out to people. He got a scholarship to a big university just like me, which I will always be proud of for the both of us.

I watched a bunch of videos, saw many pictures, and even looked up all of his records and races. Throughout his career he progressed, and the way he ran showed me he was confident in himself. I was not confident at first but I slowly came out of my shell and became very confident not only as a runner but as a person. I admire his ambition; not to win, but to make himself better throughout his journey and having the great character to be humble about it every step of the way. My goal is to become the best student I can be through my dream school UF, athletically excel throughout my college years while staying humble throughout it all.

SUBJECT: The Yellow Wall-paper

Due to an increased notice on the subject of feminism this story gives an example of their deprivation of rights. During the 1970s there was a 78% increase in protest of women's rights.  With technology connecting everyone involved in the rights movement the protest began. Technology connected everyone through the use of:

  • Television
  • Radio
  • Telephone
  • Internet

They felt trapped by man, society and within themselves. All the years went by and no woman had the courage to stand up for their rights until this time.Women were no longer happy being unequal to men and many changes happened rapidly.

Significant Changes

Shifting towards the peak of the movement getting the idea out there was no problem any more it was about actual change. It went from ranting about rights to seeing them on paper with new laws created. After the first year they were officially allowed to vote over 70% of the female population voted. Only 17% of women were in office in the 1970's now there's over 40%. Jane Addams along with many other activists were head of these movements. Because of them a strong change has happened equaling woman to man. By refocusing on new problematic areas of the US they have affected many new areas of society and opened up many new opportunities for modern day women.

Blog Post 2/ Challenge 1

The Big Decision

There is a time where we all have to experience change in our lives. Whether it is for good or for worse in the end we learn from it and adapt to it. In high school I was a baseball player. It was our third upcoming season, meaning it was my junior year. I wanted to do something different this time to really stand out to the kids and the coaches. We had our pre conditioning which meant a lot of running and working out. I decided it was time for a change, three weeks before our first workout I took the initiative to run on my own to be better than my competition (teammates). When we had our first workout our coach surprised us with a six mile run. I not only came in first but I was 15 minutes ahead of the kid in second. Through out conditioning we would always do running workouts and one day the track coach noticed my performance. Little did I know that would be the turning point of my whole life. I made a decision based on the talent I had, I did not tell my parents about it. It was a very sad and confusing time, yet it was enlightening to seek a new opportunity. My parents eventually found out when I asked them to drive me to "watch" a track meet but their biggest surprise was they saw me running and winning the event I was in! This decision impacted my life in many different ways. At first it was over whelming and scary because I did not know what situation I was gambling with. In the end though it was one of the most amazing decisions I have ever made and is a big reason as to why I became a Florida gator.

Challenge #1
I intend on choosing the literary story "The Yellow Wallpaper." I have already read the story and looked at the in depth analysis of the young woman's problems. I will re read and rethink about her story and brainstorm ideas on how to argue a claim made from the story.

The New York stock exchange is one of the most powerful things in the world. It is one major building that connects electronically with the rest of the world and basically keeps track of people stocks. The stock exchange is its own little world. Stocks are very important and require a unique understanding and skill. Throughout school I exceled in my Economics classes and computer classes. After that I realized I wanted to be a finance or business major.  I love working with numbers, and the quick pace as well as the thrill of being a risk taker. Being a risk taker in the stock market means I could become rich or lose it all in one night. I was inspired by my dad because although he was a computer science major he is amazing with money.  It always seemed like he was one step ahead of the game. He knew how to save, when to spend, and always knew what stocks to invest in. The world around me has changed so rapidly it is very hard to keep up, which is why my dad will be a huge help on the electronic side of stocks. Between proper schooling and help from my dad this seemed to be the right path. I am very excited and optimistic for what the future holds and how I will adapt to it.
